Good to Know
Shuttle bus required — no private cars inside; hop-on-hop-off loop between platforms
Platform 4 for sunset — arrive 1 hour early in peak season to claim a spot

~40 km from Zhangye — bus ¥15 / 1.5 h, or taxi ¥80–100 one way
The first time you see a photo of Zhangye Danxia, you assume it has been filtered. It has not. Red, orange, yellow, green, grey, and white stripes slant across the hillsides like a crumpled painter's palette — a polychrome landscape found nowhere else in China. This guide tells you which of the four viewing platforms to prioritize, how early to claim a sunset spot, and why the best photos happen right after rain.

The colors at Zhangye Danxia are not paint — they are time. Roughly 200 million years of sediment — sandstone, siltite, and mudstone — layered down in succession. Different eras deposited different concentrations of iron and manganese oxides: red comes from ferric iron, yellow and orange from varying oxide concentrations, green and grey from ferrous iron in low-oxygen conditions. Then the Himalayan orogeny crumpled, folded, and tilted these horizontal beds. Erosion did the rest, exposing what had been buried underground to the surface.

Zhangye's Danxia is the only site in China that combines Danxia landforms (red cliff faces and steep pillars) with colorful hills (multi-toned, gently rolling slopes). Other Chinese "Danxia" sites — Danxia Mountain in Guangdong, Taining in Fujian, Chishui in Guizhou — are all single-color red-rock landscapes. Only Zhangye is polychrome. The park earned National 5A status in January 2020 and joined the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in July 2020.
You do not need a geology degree to appreciate the result. From any platform, the hills shift color with the light — cool tones at dawn, warm gold in the afternoon, deep saturated bands at sunset.
The park sits in Linze County, Nijia Township, about 40 km west of downtown Zhangye. The distance is the main logistical challenge — no subway or rapid transit reaches the park, so plan transport ahead.
Bus — Zhangye West Bus Station runs coaches directly to the park. Tickets cost about ¥15, and the ride takes roughly 1.5 hours. Departures run hourly from 9:00 to 12:00, then at 15:30 and 16:30. Check return times at the station; the last bus back leaves in the late afternoon.
Taxi / charter car — A taxi from downtown Zhangye runs ¥80–100 one way, about 40–50 minutes. If you plan to stay for sunset, arrange a round-trip with the driver (including wait time: roughly ¥180–250), or book a charter van (full-day: ¥400–600 for a 7-seater).
Self-drive — Take the G30 Lianhuo Expressway or the S213 provincial road from Zhangye, about one hour. The park has a large parking lot (about ¥10).
From Zhangye West Railway Station (high-speed rail) — The HSR station is roughly 40 km from the park, about one hour by car. A direct shuttle may be available — check the park's official WeChat account for current schedules. Alternatively, take a taxi from the station. Park hotline: 0936-5623666.

Shuttle bus (mandatory) — No private vehicles or on-foot crossings are allowed inside the park. All visitors ride the park's hop-on-hop-off shuttle buses between platforms. The shuttle fare is included in the total price shown when you buy your ticket online.
Shuttle loop (from the North Gate): North Gate → Platform 2 → Platform 1 → Platform 5 → Platform 4 → North Gate. The loop runs one way — there is no backtracking. If you skip a platform, you cannot return to it without riding the full loop again, which wastes time.
Each numbered platform shows a different angle and color palette. Here is what to expect and how to budget your time.
Platform 2 (七彩仙缘台) is the highest point in the park. Reaching the top requires climbing 666 steps — it is a workout, but the 360-degree panoramic view from the summit justifies every step. This is the only platform where you can survey the entire Danxia landscape at once.

In the early morning, mist or low cloud sometimes drifts through the valleys between the colored hills. If your schedule permits an early-morning entry, the sunrise-plus-mist combo at Platform 2 is one of the most memorable sights in the entire park.
Platform 1 (七彩云海台) sits at a lower elevation near the entrance area — the largest platform by area. Colors are clear but slightly muted compared to other platforms. Good for quick panoramas, the S-shaped road view, and portrait photography. If time is limited, this is the platform to abbreviate.
Platform 5 extends from the same ridge as Platform 4 but offers a closer perspective on the striped hillsides. Its biggest advantage is that most visitors save their energy for Platform 4's sunset show, leaving Platform 5 relatively empty. The colored bands here look like silk ribbons draped across the slopes — fine-grained and intimate.
[图:张掖丹霞5号锦绣台近距离纹理.jpg]
Platform 4 delivers the park's most saturated colors and strongest visual impact. It faces due west, and when the sun drops low, the entire hillside lights up in deep orange-red, with color layers intensifying from base to summit — that is the "rainbow glow."
[图:张掖丹霞4号虹霞台日落色彩.jpg]
This platform is also home to the park's most famous rock formation, "Monks Praying to Buddha" (众僧拜佛) — a row of conical mounds that, from the right angle, resemble monks kneeling before a large Buddha figure. Hot-air balloon rides launch from this area too.
Sunset time varies by season: around 20:00–20:30 in summer, 17:30–18:00 in winter. Platform 4 faces due west and delivers the strongest sunset colors — see the Platform 4 section above for what to expect.

Timing your loop: Enter the park at least 2–3 hours before sunset. Following the shuttle route (2 → 1 → 5 → 4), keep your pace brisk at Platforms 1 and 5 so you reach Platform 4 well before golden hour. Platforms 1 and 5 also catch some sunset light, but the payoff is noticeably lower.
Sunrise is best viewed from Platform 1 or Platform 5. Morning light at Danxia runs cool — blue-grey tones make the warm stripes stand out more starkly. Valley mist or low cloud adds a dreamlike quality.
Summer sunrise is around 6:00–6:30 AM; winter around 7:30–8:00 AM. You need to be inside the park as soon as it opens.
The best photography window is June through early October — long daylight, good sun angles, and occasional rain that boosts color contrast. Winter can produce rare snow-on-Danxia shots, but short days and cold limit your shooting window.

In summer (usually June–September), the park offers a Night Tour at roughly ¥188 per person (confirm exact pricing on the booking platform). After sunset, the park stays open and shuttle buses take visitors to a designated zone where colored lights are projected onto the Danxia hillsides — a very different visual experience from daytime. The night program typically includes a stargazing segment.
The night tour suits visitors who have already seen the daytime version and want a different perspective, or who happen to have an extra evening in Zhangye. If your time is limited, the daytime sunset experience takes priority.
Note: The night tour does not operate every year, and specific dates may shift. Check the park's official WeChat account before your visit.
The park sits in arid, semi-desert terrain at roughly 1,800–1,900 m elevation with virtually no shade. Prepare accordingly:

Important reminders:
Following the shuttle loop through all four platforms plus sunset waiting time, most visitors spend 3–5 hours. If you plan to photograph every platform carefully, allow 4+ hours.
