Cyclist riding on the 12-meter-wide top surface of Xi'an City Wall with ancient watchtowers in the distance

Xi'an's City Wall (西安城墙) stretches 13.7 kilometers in a near-perfect rectangle around the old city — and you can cycle the entire thing in under two hours. Built in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty, this is the most complete ancient city wall still standing in China. Where most "ancient walls" are fragments behind a fence, this one is a 12-meter-wide elevated highway paved with original grey bricks, open until 10 PM, with bike rental stations every few kilometers.

A Fortress You Can Cycle

Cross-section of Xi'an City Wall showing the brick exterior and rammed earth interior layers

Xi'an City Wall (西安城墙) was built between 1370 and 1378 under the first Ming emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang. An important detail most guides miss: this is not a Tang Dynasty wall. Tang-era Chang'an was several times the size of today's walled rectangle. The Ming builders reused the foundations of the much smaller Tang Imperial City (皇城) — the administrative quarter — and expanded outward from there.

SpecData
Perimeter~13.7 km
Height12 m
Top width12–14 m (room for four horse-drawn carriages side by side)
Base width15–18 m
Gates18 (4 original Ming gates + 14 added later)

Built1370–1378 (Ming Dynasty)

The top surface is wider than most visitors expect — not a narrow path but a 12-to-14-meter-wide elevated boulevard paved with grey bricks, smooth enough for comfortable cycling. You're not riding a boardwalk; you're riding an ancient military highway.

📍 Xi'an City Wall (South Gate) (Google | Amap)

The Wall's Defense System

Bird's-eye view into the barbican kill zone from the wall ramparts, showing the enclosed space between gates

Xi'an's City Wall is more than a tall barrier. It's a complete cold-weapon-era defense system — every component has a military purpose, and understanding them turns a casual walk into a tactical tour. Each of the four main gates has a barbican (瓮城) — a walled enclosure between the outer and inner gates where attackers would be trapped under fire from all four walls. The name comes from "catching a turtle in a jar" (瓮中捉鳖). The South Gate barbican is the best-preserved — you can look straight down into its kill zone from the wall top.

Arrow Towers & Gate Towers

Front facade of the South Gate arrow tower with rows of arrow slits for defensive fire

Each main gate has an outward-facing arrow tower (箭楼) bristling with arrow slits — the South Gate alone has 48 on its front face. Behind it, the gate tower (城楼) faces inward as the command post.

Watchtowers (敌楼)

Watchtower on Xi'an City Wall, one of 98 spaced exactly 120 meters apart along the perimeter

98 watchtowers spaced exactly 120 meters apart — two arrow ranges — so adjacent archers could create overlapping fire with no blind spots. Each tower you pass while cycling marks another 120 m.

Corner Towers (角楼)

Corner tower on Xi'an City Wall with its distinctive circular protruding base for 270-degree coverage

Four corner towers on circular bases protrude from the wall, giving 270-degree coverage. The northeast corner tower is the best preserved — where the old city's grey rooftops meet the modern CBD skyline.

The Moat

Xi'an City Wall and its reflection in the surrounding moat at dusk

A 14.6 km moat encircles the wall, fully renovated and refilled with water in early 2026. Huancheng Park runs alongside for jogging, tai chi, and evening strolls. See Insider Tips for moat cruise details.

Four Gates, Four Personalities

Each of the four original Ming gates has a distinct character. Which one you enter through shapes your entire experience.

South Gate — Yongning Gate (永宁门)

Panoramic view of Yongning Gate (South Gate) and the grand plaza, Xi'an's most iconic wall entrance

The grandest, busiest, and most culturally active gate. The plaza in front is one of Xi'an's signature landmarks. The barbican here is the best preserved on the wall — the overhead view from the ramparts is unmistakable. Downside: the biggest crowds, especially on holidays.

📍 Yongning Gate (South Gate) (Google | Amap)

Cultural performances (South Gate only):

PerformanceScheduleNotes
Warrior Changing of GuardDaily 10:00 & 15:00Free to watch, South Gate plaza
Warrior PatrolDaily from morning, irregularWall-top patrol near South Gate, photo-friendly
"Dream of Chang'an" Welcome CeremonyEvenings (check schedule)Large-scale live performance; from ¥280. Show runs seasonally — confirm via 西安城墙景区 mini-program.

East, West & North Gates

East Gate — Changle Gate (长乐门)📍 (Google | Amap)

Changle Gate (East Gate) of Xi'an City Wall, a popular spot for Hanfu photography in morning light

Far fewer crowds than the South Gate, with an open square in front of the gate tower. Morning light hits this gate head-on, making it the top choice for Hanfu photo shoots — see Insider Tips below for rental details.

West Gate — Anding Gate (安定门)📍 (Google | Amap)

Anding Gate (West Gate) of Xi'an City Wall, historically the Silk Road direction

Historically the direction of the Silk Road. Quiet and uncrowded. After descending, the Muslim Quarter (北院门) is a 10-minute walk away — ideal for combining the wall with Xi'an's most famous food street in one half-day.

North Gate — Anyuan Gate (安远门)📍 (Google | Amap)

Anyuan Gate (North Gate) of Xi'an City Wall, the quietest gate near the railway station

Right next to Xi'an Railway Station, useful for a quick visit before catching a train. Looking south from the wall top gives you a panorama of the old city; looking north, the railway station and modern Xi'an. The least crowded gate.

Cycling the Wall

Cycling the full loop is the signature Xi'an City Wall experience and the way I recommend most visitors explore it. Moderate fitness is all you need.

Rental rules:

  • Deposit: ¥100 cash (refunded on return); some stations accept Alipay/WeChat deposit-free rental
  • Stations: 9 rental points along the wall — near South, East, West, North, and Hanguang gates among others
  • Return: You can return at any rental station, not just where you started. After 20:00, returns may be limited to South Gate area stations. Overtime is ¥5–10 per 10 minutes
  • Hours: Roughly 8:00–21:00 (no new rentals after 21:00, returns only)
  • Restrictions: Riders must be 12+ years old, under 65–70, and at least 1.3 m tall. Passport required (see Quick Info Card above)

Recommended Cycling Route

Go counterclockwise (east from South Gate) — starting east gives you the best light and the signature views in order:

  1. 1
East Gate and East Wall— ~25 min - Open views, best Hanfu photo backdrop
  2. 2
Northeast Corner Tower⭐— ~15 min - Best vantage point on the wall
  3. 3
North Wall— ~20 min - Railway station and modern city views
  4. 4
West Wall to South Gate⭐— ~30 min - Golden hour finish
Grey brick surface on top of Xi'an City Wall showing the wide, smooth riding path

🎯Surface Warning

Most sections are smooth grey brick, comfortable for cycling. But parts of the north and west walls have wider gaps between bricks and mild bumps. Tandem bikes feel this more due to their longer wheelbase.

Sunset & Night Views

Golden sunset light illuminating Xi'an City Wall with the city skyline in the background

Watching the sunset from the wall top is one of Xi'an's best free experiences. With no obstructions and 360-degree views, the entire wall turns golden as the sun drops behind the West Gate. Ascend 1.5–2 hours before sunset. The stretch between South Gate and West Gate, facing west, is the best vantage point. Wall illumination typically starts 18:30–19:00.

Xi'an City Wall illuminated with warm lights at night, outlining gate towers and ramparts

After dark, warm-toned lights trace the outlines of every gate tower, arrow tower, and corner tower — from the wall top, it looks like a glowing line stretching into the distance. The South Gate section has the best lighting effects. When running, the "Dream of Chang'an" live ceremony (separate ticket required) adds another layer — check availability before planning around it.

⚠️Night Cycling

Some wall sections have limited lighting after dark — use your phone flashlight. The wall stays open until 22:00 (last tickets at 21:30). Several gates offer 24-hour exits (see Hours table below).

Best Seasons

SeasonRatingWhy
Spring (Mar–May)★★★★★Ideal temperatures, cherry blossoms and willows along the moat
Autumn (Sep–Nov)★★★★★Crisp air, golden light, perfect for photography
Summer (Jun–Aug)★★★The wall top has zero shade — 40°C+ exposed brick. If visiting in summer, ascend after 17:00
Winter (Dec–Feb)★★★Windy but crowd-free. Bring a windproof jacket. Snow-covered walls are stunning, but sections may close temporarily

Summer Heat Warning

The wall top is a fully exposed surface with no trees, no awnings, and no escape from the sun. In July and August, surface temperatures can exceed 50°C. Bring hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and at least 2 liters of water — or simply visit after 5 PM for the sunset experience.

Hanguang Museum, Hanfu Photos & Moat Cruise

Hanguang Gate Heritage Museum

Inside the Hanguang Gate Heritage Museum showing excavated Tang-era rammed earth layers beneath Ming bricks

Most visitors don't realize there's a museum inside the wall itself. The Hanguang Gate Heritage Museum (含光门遗址博物馆) sits at the southwest section of the wall and displays the excavated remains of a Sui-Tang Dynasty gate found within the wall's cross-section. You can see the wall's "anatomy" — outer Ming-era bricks encasing Tang Dynasty rammed earth layers from over 1,400 years ago.

Included in the ¥54 wall ticket — no extra charge. Enter through Hanguang Gate to access both the museum and the wall top.

Hanfu Photo Experience

Visitor in traditional Hanfu costume posing for photos on Xi'an City Wall against ancient architecture

Hanfu rental shops near the East and South gates charge around ¥80–150 including hair styling and makeup. Dressing in traditional Chinese costume and posing against the grey bricks, red lanterns, and ancient gate towers has become one of Xi'an's defining tourist rituals. Morning light (9–10 AM) works best at the East Gate, where the sun hits the facade head-on.

Huancheng Park — The Local Side of the Wall

If you want to see how Xi'an residents actually relate to the wall, visit Huancheng Park. This green belt runs alongside the moat around the entire perimeter. At dawn: tai chi, jogging, birdcage walks. At dusk: square dancing, strolling couples, retired men playing chess. This is the least "touristy" and most lived-in wall experience.

City Wall Marathon

The Xi'an City Wall International Marathon (西安城墙国际马拉松) has been held regularly in autumn — the world's only marathon run on top of an ancient city wall. The course follows the full wall-top loop. Check current-year event listings if you're interested in running it.

Moat Cruise

Night cruise boat on Xi'an's moat with the illuminated City Wall reflected in the water

Boat cruises depart from the moat dock near the South Gate, taking roughly 30–40 minutes along the southern section. Seeing the illuminated wall from water level is a completely different experience — reflections of corner towers and arrow towers ripple across the surface. Tickets are approximately ¥50/person (wall admission not included).

你好,请带我去南门城墙入口,谢谢。

Hello, please take me to the South Gate City Wall entrance, thank you.

To stop anywhere along the way: say 'qǐng zài zhèlǐ tíngchē' (请在这里停车) or just point and gesture.

Facilities on the Wall

  • Restrooms: Public toilets roughly every 1 km along the wall, well-signed. Bring your own tissue
  • Shops: Small kiosks near the main gate entrances and at intervals along the wall. Water costs ¥5–8 (more than street level) — bring your own
  • Rest areas: Watchtower interiors offer shade and some have seating
  • Safety: Patrol staff and emergency phone signs along the wall

What to Bring

  • ✓Sun protection — hat, sunscreen, sunglasses (zero shade on the wall top)
  • ✓Comfortable sneakers — brick surfaces tire feet; no flip-flops or heels
  • ✓Water — minimum 1 L, 2 L in summer
  • ✓Power bank — photos and navigation drain batteries fast
  • ✓Wet wipes / tissue — restrooms may not have paper
  • ✓Passport — required at the gate and bike rental

What to Do After the Wall

The wall's central location is the geographic heart of Xi'an sightseeing — several top attractions are within walking distance after you descend.

Muslim Quarter (北院门)📍 (Google | Amap)

Bustling food stalls and crowds in Xi'an's Muslim Quarter, the city's most famous food street

10–15 min from the West or South Gate. Xi'an's most famous food district: lamb paomo, roujiamo, liangpi, biángbiáng noodles, lamb skewers — enough variety for an entire day of eating. Plan as your post-wall meal.

Bell Tower & Drum Tower📍 (Google | Amap)

Xi'an Bell Tower glowing under night illumination at the city center

15 min north from the South Gate. The Bell Tower (钟楼) and Drum Tower (鼓楼) stand about 200 meters apart and form Xi'an's iconic landmark pair. The Drum Tower sits right at the entrance to the Muslim Quarter.

Stele Forest Museum (碑林博物馆)📍 (Google | Amap)

Stone steles on display inside the Stele Forest Museum near Xi'an City Wall

5 min from the South or Wenchang Gate. Over 3,000 stone steles including original rubbings from calligraphy masters like Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan. Admission ¥65, or ¥120 combo with the wall.

Shuyuanmen Culture Street (书院门)📍 (Google | Amap)

Right outside the South Gate. A pedestrian street of brush shops, calligraphy galleries, seal carving, and antique stores — quieter and more scholarly than the Muslim Quarter.
